The Evolution of The Ryan Reynolds Workout
For nearly the last decade, Ryan Reynolds has been viewed as one of the fittest of Hollywood stars. His portrayal of Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity is what really put him on the map from a physique standpoint. Much like Brad Pitt will forever be linked to Fight Club, an image search for ‘Ryan Reynolds workout’ will bring up lots of pics from the third Blade film.
Reynolds has said that getting his body in shape for the role took about 5 months. His diet consisted of a lot of healthy proteins like chicken, fish, eggs, and steak. Carbs came from oatmeal and brown rice. One interesting note is that he ate plenty of carbs. He doesn’t buy into the low-carb fad and believes that you get cranky if you don’t consume enough carbohydrates. Reynolds attributes diet with about 80% of his success, and was eating 8-10 small meals a day to add lean mass and to keep his blood sugar even.
As far as supplements go, creatine was a big help to him. He also took a daily multivitamin, whey protein powder, CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), and L-glutamine.
Reynolds trained with Darren Chapman from the UK. Chapman’s Ryan Reynolds workout consisted of 6 days of training. They started each workout with abs first (one exercise consisted of lying leg raises in which he placed a 15 pound dumbbell between his feet) and focused on a different muscle group each day (chest, back, shoulders, etc.).
Ryan lifted heavy and stayed in an 8-12 rep range. It’s said that he gained 20 pounds of muscle and was at 3% body fat at the end of the five months.
His workout routine resulted in his abs looking so good that some fitness writers accused him of having ab implants!
The remake of The Amityville Horror followed Blade a year later. In his portrayal of George Lutz, Reynolds wanted to create an imposing figure, so he continued with his Blade routine. He may have slightly less muscle, but is still ripped in Amityville.
A few romantic comedies followed Amityville and they didn’t require the bulk of his more action oriented movies. In 2007, Reynolds appeared in an interesting independent film called The Nines. In it he plays three different characters who are intertwined in the story. He appears to have less muscle than in Blade: Trinity or Amityville, but he is still very defined. If you like movies that are thought provoking and a little trippy, The Nines is worth checking out.
For Green Lantern, Ryan Reynolds workout changed somewhat. He worked out seven days a week for about 90 minutes a day. The workout changed constantly. For example, some days he worked mostly legs whereas others were comprised of a lot of abs work. On days when he was completely exhausted, he did a lot of yoga and pilates. A lot of the differences depended on shooting on that particular day.
